Many Body Effects in Fast Ion-Atom Collisions
Traditionally in atomic physics the many body aspect of the problem has fo-cussed on energy levels of atoms, where correlation plays a role at the few per cent level. In this paper we present an overview for non-specialists of the much larger effect that correlation has on cross sections for excitation, ionization and charge transfer in an ion atom collision. New methods for time dependent perturbations of many body systems have been developed which might be of interest to a many body audience. But more importantly, we hope to stimulate work by many body experts in the problems which yet have to be solved.
