Abstract

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common pathogen complicating the course of renal transplant recipients, as well as the course of bone marrow, cardiac and liver transplant recipients (1, 2, 3, 4). In organ transplant patients, CMV is the single most important infection manifesting as either a subclinical infection or a potentially life-threatening disease. The incidence of symptomatic CMV infection in the transplant population is high, 60–90%, compared to immunosuppressed non-transplant patients, 42–66% (2).
