Focal Cold Injury Alters the Pharmacodynamics of Pentobarbital and the Metabolic Response to Anesthetics: Evidence for Functional Cerebral Depression
Superficial focal cold injury to the cerebral cortex has been previously shown to be associated with widespread depression of glucose utilization (CMRglu), which is maximal 3 days after the injury (Pappius, 1981). These authors (Pappius, 1981), Pappius and Wolfe, 1983, Pappius et al, 1988) have suggested that the decrease in CMRglu represents functional cerebral depression, and have presented evidence to support a role for cortical monoamines (serotonin and noradrenaline) in this phenomenon. Ginsberg et al, in a model of focal thrombotic infarction, have also observed widespread metabolic effects and have interpreted these findings to represent functional diaschisis (Ginsberg et al, 1989).
