Abstract

The explosion of advanced data and video communication technology in recent years raises new challenges for the telecommunications industry. The wide spread deployment of local data communication networks and the advent of video teleconferencing has resulted in interconnection bottlenecks and demands for affordable, high speed transmission services. Future services, such as high-definition, 3-dimensional, real-time imaging, will create even greater challenges for communication networks. Today, these challenging services are often supported through special assemblies and service specific, overlay networks that increase cost and limit utility.
