Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 315))

Abstract

Recently, the oxygen radical has attracted attention as a factor that is capable of inducing a variety of diseases. Taurine, on the other hand, is an amino acid present in blood in the highest amount among the free amino acids. However, while the physiological functions of taurine are of special interest, the mechanisms of its action are for the most part unknown. We have studied the possible protective effect of taurine on the biomembrane against damage caused by the action of the oxygen radical.
