Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 319))

Abstract

The advent of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome has ushered in a renaissance in the field of antiviral research. Many compounds possessing inhibitory activity against different viruses have been described. New drugs such as azidothymidine have been added to the limited arsenal of licensed antiviral agents but serious side effects associated with many preparations have restricted their widespread use. In an effort to reduce adverse reactions, combination regimens consisting of antiviral drugs and synergistically acting immunomodulators are being increasingly investigated.
