Influence of Cryopreservation on Viability and Nutritional Microcirculation of Islets of Langerhans*

  • Chapter
Oxygen Transport to Tissue XIV

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 317))

Abstract

Cryopreservation of isolated islets of Langerhans would be a necessary procedure for realizing clinical pancreatic islet grafting for treatment of diabetes mellitus (Rajotte et al., 1981; Ricordi et al., 1988). However, little is known about the viability of isolated islets after the cryopreservation procedure, particularly in regard to their potential for revascularization after transplantation.
