“In Situ” XPS Investigation of Polymers Metallized by Evaporation

  • Chapter
Metallized Plastics 3

Abstract

The chemical interactions of thermally evaporated gold and aluminium with several polymer substrates: polyethylene, polystyrene, polypropylene, polydimethylsiloxane, silicone, poly(ethyleneterephthalate), poly(ether ether ketone) and polyvinylalcohol have been investigated “in-situ” by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). From XPS core level shifts and intensity measurements a mechanism of adsorption of metal atoms on specific acidic sites present on polymer surfaces is evidenced, with the formation of a charge transfer complex without surface bond breaking. The detailed mechanism as well as the interface morphology and growth mechanism are governed by the balance between metal-metal and metal-polymer interactions. A trend in the strength of evaporated Al - polymer interaction can be monitored by XPS shifts correlated with an electron transfer from Al to the acidic sites on polymer.
