The Frontiers of High Temperature Structural Materials

  • Chapter
Structural and Phase Stability of Alloys

Abstract

The science and technology fronts of advanced high temperature structural materials are defined and discussed. Current research is focussing on monolithic intermetallic and ceramic compounds, as well as metal, intermetallic, and ceramic matrix composites. An emerging field, in addition to these, is intelligent materials. These composite structures are either self diagnostic, self attenuated, or both. Challenges being addressed pivot about mechanical integrity, interdiffusion and phase stability, interface engineering, and material status sensing and signal processing.
