Abstract
During plant development the plastid compartment undergoes important structural and biochemical changes. The different types of plastids and their precursors (proplastids, etioplasts, chloroplasts, chromoplasts,…) are often interconvertible but each type exhibits its own structure and biological function (Sitte et al., 1980; Akoyunoglou, 1984). Chloroplast differentiation represents a complex process involving a coordinate interaction between the nucleus and the plastid (Mullet, 1988; Taylor, 1989). It is well known that the etioplast/chloroplast development requires the formation of pigments and proteins which are, together with other components, necessary for the assembly of an intact photosynthetic apparatus. (Wild, 1978; Humbeck et al., 1989).
