Abstract
In higher plants light affects chloroplast formation in several ways. A photoreaction within the pathway of chlorophyll synthesis is well documented: formation of chlorophyll (ide) from protochlorophyll(ide). Moreover, light absorption by sensor pigments is crucial as well. These are phytochrome (operating predominantly in the red and far-red spectral range) and cryptochrome (operating in the blue and UV-A spectral range).
