Abstract

Molecules subjected to intense optical fields can ionize and dissociate by the multiple absorption and scattering of photons. A new kind of dissociation and ionization has been seen in laser fields that approach or exceed the binding fields in the molecule. The electron spectra show many peaks, corresponding to the absorption of more photons than the minimum number necessary for ionization. This new behavior is called above-threshold ionization, or ATI.1 The energies of dissociating molecular fragments also show absorption or emission of additional photons beyond the minimum order process; this has been called above-threshold dissociation, or ATD.2 These two new phenomena will be reviewed in this paper. Recent experiments in molecular hydrogen and deuterium performed at the University of Michigan and at AT&T Bell Laboratories illustrate the main features.3–6
