Abstract

Despite enormous advances in clinical medicine, the prognosis of primary malignant brain neoplasms remains dismal. Currently, the most effective therapies result in a median survival of less than one year, with the majority of patients dying within two years (Black, 1991). In order to develop more effective methods for combatting this disease, we took advantage of two biological properties that are critical to glioma growth: first, the observation that malignant gliomas are predominantly a local disease usually recurring within two centimeters of the original focus (Hochberg and Pruitt, 1980); and second, the increasing evidence that brain tumors, like most solid tumors, are angiogenesis-dependent (Brem, et. al., 1988).
