Effects of Ethanol on Amino Acid and Protein Metabolism

  • Chapter
Medical and Nutritional Complications of Alcoholism

Abstract

Alcohol interferes with amino acid and protein metabolism at various levels in different tissues. Effects of ethanol on the digestion of exogenous proteins and the absorption of their constituent amino acids is discussed in Chapter 10. In this chapter we focus primarily on the effects of ethanol on amino acid metabolism, the endogenous synthesis of proteins (primarily in the liver), their degradation, and their secretion from the liver into the bloodstream. Hepatic consequences of the alterations in these processes are emphasized.
