Abstract
It is well known that retinoic acid (RA) applied to the anterior margin of chick limb buds induces antero-posterior duplicate formation as ZPA (zone of polarizing activity) does, and the degree of duplication depends on the concentration of applied RA. RA is considered to be formed in ZPA and affects limb bud cells as a morphogen (Wolpert, 1990). The limb bud cells recognize their positions with respect to antero-posterior axis with the concentration of RA and differentiates to form cartilage pattern. However, it is possible as originally demonstrated by Summerbell and Harvey (1983) that RA may convert adjacent mesodermal cells to ZPA and the ZPA may affect the cells of progress zone by releasing some other molecule(s) with morphogenproperty or through the process of local interactions between the tissues with different positional values.
