Abstract

Thyroid hormones play an important role in many biological functions. They are involved in growth and development, in stimulation of metabolism and thermogenesis, and they have a permissive role for the actions of other hormones (Fig. 1). The effects of hyper- and hypo-thyroidism have marked clinical symptoms, in particular in relation to the cardiovascular system. In this contribution, the cardiac and vascular effects of triiodothyronine (T3) as well as the development of T3-induced cardiac hypertrophy will be discussed.
