Abstract

This chapter is devoted to a discussion of the basic analytic and a few numerical results on the effective cross sections for bremsstrahlung, first in Coulomb (Secs. 13.2-13.4) and then in non-Coulomb static fields (the field of a rigid many-electron atom or ion; Secs. 13.5-13.7). In Sec. 13.6 we analyze the interrelation of the quantum mechanical and classical descriptions of bremsstrahlung, and discuss the possibility of developing an intermediate, semiclassical approach.
