Abstract

The formalism of second quantization provides a powerful method to describe the various intermediate coupling mechanisms of two-photon transitions in lanthanide ions. A complete analysis has been carried out by means of a fourth-order mechanism, which combines the two-photon interaction with spin-orbit coupling and crystal field elements. The resulting selection rules are discussed, in relationship with the recently obtained TP-spectra of Tb3+ in the octahedral elpasolite lattices.
