Abstract

The thermal effects on luminescence line positions and widths of Nd3+ in Gd3Sc2Ga3O12:Cr3+, Nd3+ were studied from 78 to 600 K. The temperature dependence of linewidths and lineshifts is explained in terms of an ion-phonon interaction as a perturbation using a Debye phonon distribution. The Debye temperature is treated as an adjustable parameter to get the best fit to the experimental data. The linewidths are related to Raman phonon scattering, direct phonon processes, and random microscopic strains of the crystal. The lineshifts are due to the stationary effect of the ion-phonon interaction.
