Abstract
The luminescence of the Eu3+ ion in calcium compounds is reported. The effectively positive charge of the Eu3+ ion gives rise to high rates of radiationless processes in the excited charge-transfer state. This can be understood from a model which is based on the Configurational Coordinate Model. It is shown that an adapting of structural parameters may increase the luminescence output, but even in the ideal configuration about half of the input of light quanta is lost nonradiatively.
