Fibronectin-Binding Proteins of Staphylococci and Streptococci

Abstract

Fibronectin (Fn) is a large dimeric glycoprotein found in soluble form in plasma and other body fluids and in fibrillar form in the extracellular matrix of connective tissue. The protein contains a number of domains capable of independent binding to different ligands (Figure 1). The eukaryotic cell-binding site within Fn containing an RGD sequence interacts with a specific receptor of the integrin family.1,2 It has also been shown that the C-terminal heparin-binding domain can promote eucaryotic cell adhesion by an RGD-independent mechanism.3
