Abstract
The electrolysis of brine (concentrated NaCl solution) in chlor-alkali cells accounts for approximately 96% of all chlorine production (see Ref. 1, p. 105). World chlorine capacity in 1991 was about 43.9 million metric tons per year.2 The 1991 distribution of chlorine capacity in the world is shown in Fig. 1.2 The U.S. and Western Europe have more than half the world capacity. World capacity has decreased by about 14% since 1982.3The major producer countries are the U.S., Germany, Japan, former U.S.S.R., and China.2–7
