Abstract
The field of psychopathology may reasonably be defined as the study of human behavior that is, on its face, baffling and paradoxical—where the limits of ordinary understandings of why people do whatever they do are exceeded, thereby encouraging the introduction of extraordinary constructs that are purported to explain the unintelligible. Given human proclivities to be made very uncomfortable by behavior in others that is grossly aberrant (hence unpredictable and uncontrollable), an abundance of such extraordinary constructs have been advanced over the course of human intellectual history. Most of them now are generally viewed as quaint, or even absurdly amusing.
