Plasma Interleukin 8 Levels in Patients with Septic Shock
IL-8, polymorphonuclear leukocyte elastase (PMNE) and endotoxin at the development of septic shock were measured. IL-8 and PMNE were measured by ELISA. Endotoxin level was measured by endotoxin-specific Endospecy test (Seikagaku Corporation, Ltd., Tokyo). The pre-procedure of the plasma was carried out by using new PCA method developed by us. Its normal level was less than 9.8 pg/ml. IL-8 level at the development of the septic shock was 6.28 ± 9.00 ng/ml (mean ± SD, n=29), and significantly higher (p<0.001) than 0.35 ± 0.35 ng/ml (n=40) in the sepsis without shock. IL-8 level in volunteers was less than measurable limit. The significant correlation was observed between IL-8 and PMNE levels at the development of septic shock (r=0.6916, p<0.001). No correlation was observed between endotoxin and IL-8 levels at the development of septic shock (r=0.1839, p=0.3395). It was suggested that IL-8 may be related to the production of PMNE at the septic shock, and substances except for endotoxin may also be related to the stimulation of the production of IL-8.
