Abstract
Site BS-12 lies near the northwestern end of the Bir Sahara East depression, in the same erosional remnant of lacustrine deposits as protected the Middle Paleolithic sites, BS-1 and E-88-11 (see map on p. 472). It is associated with the deposits of West Lake 2. It was first discovered in 1972 from surface exposures of artifacts on the slope of the southwestern end of this erosional remnant. In 1973, five trenches and several 1-m2 test-pits were dug in the vicinity of BS-12 (Wendorf and Schild 1980: 40). All but one of these excavations appears on the 1988 site map (Fig. 35.1); the omitted trench was on the top of the remnant, to the northwest and slightly beyond the map’s boundaries.
