Abstract
Site E-86-1 lies on the northeastern edge of the Middle Paleolithic Sand Pan (see map on p. 358), approximately 50 m due west of the edge of the Tarfawi depression. The site consisted of a 20 × 15 m scatter of Middle Paleolithic artifacts, which appeared to have at least two clusters that blended into each other. The western edge of the scatter contained a number of artifacts encrusted with calcium carbonate, indicating that they had been exposed on the surface only recently; this area was therefore selected for excavation.
