Metaphors as seen by a Knowledge Elicitor

Abstract

A methodology for the design of knowledge-based systems (KBSs) to operate in complex domains has been described by Behrooz (1986). the basic stages of the methodology are the elicitation of the domain knowledge, the determination of the structure of this knowledge, in terms of its elements and their interrelationships, and the use of the structure as the structure of a KBS to operate in the domain. When domain knowledge is elicited from a human expert, it is the structure of this person’s knowledge that determines the form of the KBS. This ensures not only that the KBS possesses the expert’s knowledge but also that the KBS adopts the same approach and displays the same behaviour as the human expert. This ensures that people interacting with the KBS will find themselves on familiar ground in that they can expect to be treated, and, indeed, will be treated, in the same way as they would when dealing with a human expert.
