Abstract
The early diagnosis of osteonecrosis (ON) is based on the perception that ON is an evolutionary disease whose symptoms may precede any radiographic evidence of the presence of the disease. The presence of high-risk populations, and the general consensus that all treatment modalities show improved success rates when the disease is treated early in its course, reinforce the desire to identify the disease early. These efforts to identify the disease early could result in confusion as to the definition of the disease, particularly as early changes identified with new diagnostic techniques may spontaneously resolve.
