Abstract
This chapter describes the basic concepts and issues of hypermedia and hypertext as well as examining some of the industry and technical forces that make HyTime a powerful and promising solution to some real problems in hypermedia interchange. We begin with a historical example that introduces the basic points as well as stressing that the notions of hypertext are not really new: the basic problems it addresses have been with us almost since the beginning of writing. It is rather the technology for solving these problems that has changed
