The development of the method of trapping of organic molecules and enzymes in porous sol-gel matrices triggered the preparation and design of a wide range of novel optical materials. We review past achievements and recent progress made in the development of several classes of these materials, representing the diversity that the trapping approach allows: Chemical sensors, enzymatic sensors, electrooptical liquid crystal materials, luminescent materials and photochromic materials.
