Abstract

The apical brush border of enterocytes is designed to expand the luminal membrane surface available for hydrolysis and transport. In 1961, Crane et al described the brush border of intestinal epithelial cells as a functionally unique subcellular organelle, as well as digestive-absorptive surface (1). Since then, the microvillus membrane, which represents the apical domain of enterocytes, has been shown to possess an array of membrane-anchored hydrolases as illustrated in table 1.
