Abstract

Few surgeons with current, active liver surgery practices who had their residency 15 or more years ago really learned liver surgery during their residency. Primarily self-taught, they developed their own surgical approaches to liver surgery as the volume of liver surgery has increased through the years. Occasionally, liver surgeons have also been active in liver transplant programs, and have adapted some of the perspectives of liver transplantation and the unique surgical approaches and exposures noted in liver transplantation to resectional surgery. Therefore, the approaches to liver surgery can vary between surgeons, and the use of equipment, such as clamps and retractors, also varies according to the surgeon’s individual preferences and evolution of his or her surgical techniques.
