Abstract
The energy conversions considered here are achieved by the appropriate design of polypeptides or what may also be called protein-based polymers or model proteins. As these involve biomolecular compositions derivable from biological production, the energy conversions are accessible to living organisms. In spite of this, it is not correct to assume that the mechanism was discovered by studying some biological energy conversion process. Quite the contrary, it is yet necessary to demonstrate that the discovered mechanism of energy conversion is utilized in any biological process. Because of the efficiency and versatility of the mechanism and because the mechanism shows great parallelity with what is known about biological energy conversion processes, it is anticipated to be a dominant mechanism in biological processes, but this has yet to be shown.
