Abstract

Indwelling internal stents often become encrusted with insoluble urinary salts. The crystal deposits lead to blockage of the internal lumen and enlargement of the external diameter. The drainage function of the stent is greatly impaired and injury to ureteral mucosa can occur when the stent is removed.
