Abstract
Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) have a wide range of applications, particularly in the field of industrial automation and general materials handling, such as in warehousing. There are also an increasing number of specialized applications for AGVs such as for fire-fighting, underwater maintenance of offshore structures and handling hazardous materials under accident conditions. The concepts of vehicles used in all these applications have many principles that have some commonality, such as guidance and sensor systems. The level of guidance techniques and sensor systems on an AGV depends on the nature of the application. AGV applications range from vehicles operating in highly structured environments such as a factory workshop, to autonomous vehicles that may have to work in an unstructured environment such as in fire-fighting applications.
