Abstract

Six months after the outbreak of a mysterious pneumonia among conventioneers at the state American Legion meeting in Philadelphia during the summer of 1976, Joseph McDade and his colleagues at the Centers for Disease Control identified the causative organism, a fastidious gram-negative bacillus, and subsequently named Legionella pneumophila.1 Further epidemiologic investigation led to the discovery that this organism was also responsible for even earlier outbreaks of disease for which no cause had been found.2,3.
