Abstract
The metabolic micromilieu (including blood flow and oxygenation) is an important research topic in clinical oncology (Vaupel et al. 1989, Molls and Feldmann 1991, Feldmann et al. 1992). The sensitivity to radiation is positively correlated with the concentration of free oxygen (Gray et al. 1953, Evans and Naylor 1963). Well oxygenated tumor cells are more sensitive to radiation than anoxic tumor cells. Considerable advances have been made in the investigation of tissue oxygenation using a novel technique (Fleckenstein), which allows for the systematic evaluation of the tissue oxygen status. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in oxygenation patterns of recurrent tumors under extreme treatment conditions, in particular under hyperthermic conditions.
