Abstract
This paper reports experiments that examine whether the functional unit of hemoglobin in the blood of mammalian embryos is the tetramer. This has generally been assumed to be the case in all mammalian blood - adult, fetal and embryonic, although measurements on blood from other classes of vertebrates have indicated that the functional unit may contain more than four subunits.
