Abstract

Solid Buckminsterfullerene C 60 undergoes an orientational ordering transition1–5 below T ≈ 260 K. The transition is from a high temperature structure with space group Fm3m to a low temperature ordered structure whose space group is Pa3. The transition is first order and is accompanied by a lattice contraction6 of approximately 0.04 Å. The change in the transition temperature with pressure is dT c /dP = 10.4±0.2 K/kbar.7 Experimental aspects of the transition are discussed in more detail in an article in this volume by Kosmas Prassides.
