Abstract
The major function of the ribosome is to translate mRNA. However, until very recently our knowledge about the shape, conformation and topography of mRNA on the ribosome has been very limited. It is still not understood how a template polynucleotide moves through the ribosome and what ribosomal components are responsible for this fundamental process. Moreover, these problems were obviously off the “mainstream” of ribosotnology. Typically, only a few chapters of the previous monograph on the ribosome (the so-called the “blue” Ribosome-Book) were partially devoted to mRNA-ribosome interactions and none of them discussed the topography and spatial organization of mRNA on the ribosome.
