The Role of Ion Channels in Vascular Endothelium

  • Chapter
Ion Flux in Pulmonary Vascular Control

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 251))

Abstract

In the past few years, the role of ion channels in several endothelial cell functions has been progressively elucidated. Particularly, we have learned how the membrane potential, controlled mostly by K+ channels, exerts a crucial control function on Ca2+ influx (and thereby on Ca2+-dependent endothelial reactions like release of nitric oxide), while Ca2+ influx, in turn, indirectly affects the membrane potential. Some pathways for Ca2+ influx have been studied on the level of single channel analysis, although the knowledge of these pathways is still far from complete. Furthermore, ion channels appear to be intimately involved in the response to shear stress and flow.
