The development of a bitemporal extension to SQL92 requires accommodation of transaction time. This chapter outlines such support in TSQL2. The major addition is two functions, “VALID” and “TRANSACTION”, to enable the specification of the required dimension, with a default of valid-time to enable compatibility to existing proposals and expected frequency of use. This chapterd focuses on data-oriented transaction-time rather than schema-oriented transaction-time (schema-time) and thus schema versioning is not discussed.
