Given a set of existing knowledge sources, attempting to link them together directly would be extremely complicated, whereas creating a meta-level framework to combine these subsystems is both elegant and effective. The blackboard model presents a natural platform for meta-level integration. Taking a meta-programming view presents opportunities for explicit and adaptive control that would otherwise not be available.
