Abstract
Complex distributed systems, like complex distributed businesses and organizations, require mechanisms of integration and cooperation. The blackboard model has contributed a view of modular processes or knowledge sources as individuals that can contribute to a larger undertaking. The way that knowledge sources behave and interact can be systematically structured when such systems are built from scratch but when integrating existing systems the ideal forms of interaction and cooperation are not quite as clear.
