Effect of irradiation of polymeric packaging material on the formation of volatile compounds

  • Chapter
Food Packaging and Preservation

Abstract

Volatile compounds formed by electron beam irradiation of principal flexible food packaging materials (polyethylene, polyester terephthalate and oriented polypropylene) were examined and sampled by using a dynamic headspace technique and identified by combined gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Hydrocarbons, ketones, and aromatic compounds were found.

A more detailed study on irradiated polypropylene indicates that the quantity of volatile compounds increased with the irradiation doses and the duration of contact with food simulants (aqueous, alcoholic or acid simulants).

The average yield of irradiation products trapped into polypropylene is estimated within a range of 1 to 50 ppm.
