Abstract
The goal of this chapter is to examine packaging options, especially for food products, in light of their environmental impact, along with looking at current and projected changes in packaging, and the effects these may have on our environment. Although the entire life cycle of packages, from acquisition of raw materials through eventual disposal of the package, must be examined for a complete evaluation of environmental impact, in this chapter we do not discuss the impacts associated with disposal, since they are covered in a later chapter. Thus, we examine environmental impact due to the acquisition of raw materials, processing those raw materials into packaging materials and then to packages, and distributing the packages (filled or unfilled) to their users.
