Abstract

The word “marina” is generally used to describe a recreational boat facility, commonly referred to as small-craft marina; it is a water-dependent facility generally located on the body of water to enable boaters to obtain the shortest possible way to cruising waters. Sometimes the term “small-craft harbor” is used as a synonym for the word “marina” to describe facilities that harbor and service recreational boats. The former term, however, is more applicable in a broader spectrum of usage, for example, for description of facilities such as small fishing ports or basins to harbor small commercial boats. A marina is a place where boating people can keep their yachts and motorboats and obtain essential supplies such as fuel, food, and drinking water.

This is a reviewed and expanded version of Chapter 14 “Small Craft Marinas,” by G. Tsinker previously published, in Handbook of Coastal and Ocean Engineering, Vol. 3 (1992), edited by J. B. Herbich. Gulf Publishing Company, Houston Texas.
