Abstract

The Republic of Argentina is located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Andes mountain range along the southeastern coast of South America. The seismic activity in Argentina is concentrated mostly in the western and northwestern parts of the country; this area of the Andes, part of the Pacific Ring, has been subjected to a series of violent earthquakes.

The authors are very grateful to Dr. Rodolfo Danesi, director of the Structures Laboratory of the National University of Tucumán, Argentina, for the support given during the development of this work, and to Dr. Mario Paz, Professor, University of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky, U.S.A., for the encouragement and information supplied for the preparation of this chapter.
