Abstract

Spain is not located in a region of high seismicity. However, the seismic events that occurred in the past in some parts of the country produced major damage to structures and resulted in many deaths. One such seismic event occurred in Andalusia in 1884; it damaged 17,000 buildings and resulted in 1,000 deaths. Although the need for a Spanish seismic code for the design of structures was widely recognized, there were no legal binding regulations until 1963. The first set of Spanish regulations containing a definition of seismic action, Norma M.V. 101–1962, became a law in 1963. It was limited to the methodology for computing earthquake forces on buildings and defining other actions to be considered in building design.
