Abstract

Although most of France has experienced little or no seismicity, records starting in A.D. 1021 indicate that tremors with intensities up to X on the International Macroseismic Intensity Scale (MSK)1 have occurred in the southern and southeastern parts of France. (The most recent damaging earthquake in these areas occurred in 1909 in the county of Nice.)

The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance of the French Earthquake Engineering Association and more specifically of its president, Victor Davidovici.
